Although it was the most barbaric form of execution, crucifixion was not uncommon in the 1st Century, nor was it uncommon for a corpse to be wrapped and buried by placing it in a cave.
Jesus’ death and burial, however, were unique beyond unique. Not only did He give advance notice of His execution, He told His disciples that His grave would be no match for Him; that He would overcome the world by overcoming death; that He would be raised to life again in a supreme example of what God has in store for us.
Thus, the resurrection validates the scriptural promise of our redemption through faith in Jesus, God’s chosen one to reign. For a dead king cannot be a reigning King! Of all the world’s religions, this is a proclamation no other faith can make.
