By the time Jesus began His ministry in the early days of the 1st Century, the Pharisees (the religious elite of that time) had added many of their own rules to the Jewish laws.
There were so many “do’s” and “don’ts” that religious life had become a burden to the Jewish people.
There are many in our religious communities, like the Pharisees of old, who have allowed the “purpose” – the intended message of Jesus – to be overshadowed by the “process” of trying to act religious. Jesus referred to these people as the “blind leading the blind” and said that this type of “misguidedness” would eventually lead them to “fall into a ditch.”
In all aspects of life, but especially in knowing the truth of God, it is our responsibility to stay true to His word. We must sift through the religious practices that may be leading us into a ditch and away from focusing on a true relationship with Christ. After all, Jesus did not come to start a religion. He came to testify to the truth of God, offering us a revolutionary new way of living out God’s plan.
